What Will Happen in the Silver Cup?

For the second last time this season the Speedcars will once again return to the track this Saturday night, racing in the annual Silver Cup event at the Perth Motorplex for the twelfth time in history.

With the Pool Shop Group Track Championship still up for grabs drivers will be keen to collect as many points as possible and with Australian Champion Dayne Kingshott not in the field due to attending his own wedding, not to mention the on-track return of a Speedcar legend, the competition just got a little bit more intense with any number of drivers capable of claiming the win.

Returning to the field this weekend will be Scott Glazebrook aboard the familiar #3 machine. With thirty-seven Perth Motorplex feature wins alone, two of which were Silver Cup events, Glazebrook is the all-time feature winner leader at the venue across all divisions. It has been a number of seasons since we have seen ‘The Iceman’ competing, with his last feature win on the 22nd of November 2014, but Glazebrook is racing for his family and despite being rusty being his own admission, shouldn’t take long to get a handle back on the division he loves best and could well be challenging for the win come feature time.

Glen Mears is the man who leads the Perth Motorplex Track Championship and despite having a solid points lead, is focused on grabbing a feature win to close out his season after already recording five podium finishes in 2018/19. Mears has been the model of consistency at each event this year and regularly races his way through the field towards the pointy end, something he will be keen to emulate Saturday night.

Rob Golding is mathematically the only other driver still in the hunt for the Pool Shop Group Perth Motorplex Track Championship after he too has scored some consistent results. A podium at the last show was a highlight for Rob and something he will want to repeat come feature time.

Beau Doyle is currently third in the Championship in what has been an excellent rookie season for the youngster. Going upside down in the last show at Collie Speedway wasn’t ideal but the team has worked hard to repair the damage and will be ready to finish the season on a high.

Alfie Guadagnino and Keenan Fleming have both already had a feature win this season but come into the show with contrasting fortunes. Guadagnino raced his way to a find third place at the Laurie Matthews Memorial while Fleming missed the show with a delay waiting for engine parts. Both come in feeling they have something to prove and are big chances of grabbing a second win for season 2018/19.

Dave Perry has been consistently quick this season and after a great run in the last Motorplex show that saw him battling with American Alex Bright, he came home with an excellent second place, but would love to move one more step up the podium for the first time while Dan Golding has also been fast, qualifying on pole for the Laurie Matthews Memorial last week.

Add in Steven Henderson who has been getting faster each time he hits the track this season and is only a bit of luck away from grabbing a race win, the always improving Gary Mann and Phil Jeffrey and it sure to be a great way to begin the run home for season 2018/19.

Drivers will again compete in a heat and an Indian File event prior to the all-important feature race. Action kicks off from about 5.00pm with preliminary events, with Speedcars slated to hit the track at around 6pm!
